Emmy's Muse

A home for poet and spoken word artist Emmy Mawumenyo, with her poems and stories, short videos, and ebooks sold with Mobile Money or card.

Emmy's Muse homepage, with Emmy's portrait behind the headline "Virtuoso, Ink to Speak" and a Start reading button.

What it is

Emmy’s Muse is the website of Emmy Mawumenyo, a Ghanaian poet, spoken word artist and Vice President of Poetic Koncept. It brings her poems, stories, art and short videos into one place, and sells her ebooks.

The problem

Her work lived in Facebook posts and on Poetic Koncept, so readers had no single place to find it, follow new pieces or buy her books. Most of her readers are on phones and share writing on WhatsApp.

Key features

  • Readers share a line as an image: select any line of a poem and get a quote card for WhatsApp Status, with the poem’s link.
  • Ebooks with Mobile Money or card through Paystack, a free sample PDF for each book, and download links limited by count and time.
  • Night reading and text size controls, remembered on the reader’s phone.
  • Series for stories told in parts, and audio readings in Emmy’s own voice.
  • Newsletter with double opt in, and automatic share images so every link previews well on WhatsApp.
  • Built to load fast on mobile data: self hosted fonts, no tracking cookies, accessible markup.

The design

Emmy wanted the site to feel grown up and literary, like a photographer’s portfolio rather than a blog template. The look is ivory, ink and a single maroon accent, with her portrait moving slowly behind the tagline “Virtuoso, Ink to Speak”. The UI was laid out in Figma, desktop and phone.

Emmy’s Muse homepage on desktop: portrait hero with the tagline, a Browse row, the latest poem in a bordered card, more writing, an ebooks band, About Emmy with her photo, the newsletter signup and the footer.

Two phone screens of Emmy’s Muse side by side: the portrait hero with the tagline and Start reading button, then the Browse links, the latest poem card and the next poem.

My role

I designed and built the site: a custom WordPress block theme and plugin, the shop and payments, and the reading features, working from Emmy’s brief and her reference sites. The site is still in progress ahead of launch.

Let’s build something meaningful.

Have a product to build, a brand to shape, or a class to teach? I’d love to hear about it.
